For centuries, First Nations peoples have organized games throughout\u00a0North America,\u00a0Turtle Island.\u00a0These\u00a0games, which embody social and moral values\u00a0that\u00a0have been\u00a0passed down from generation to generation, are deeply important to\u00a0Indigenous peoples.\u00a0What\u2019s\u00a0more,\u00a0a number of\u00a0modern sports are inspired by these traditional games.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), first held in 1990,\u00a0represented\u00a0the realization of a twenty-year dream. Held every four years, they have over time\u00a0become\u00a0the largest gathering dedicated to Indigenous sports and cultures in North America.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Since then,\u00a0the NAIG\u00a0have\u00a0been held nine times\u00a0and\u00a0welcomed\u00a0over\u00a05,000 young Indigenous athletes competing in\u00a0more than\u00a015\u00a0traditional and modern\u00a0disciplines.\u00a0A\u00a0new\u00a0trial\u00a0sport is\u00a0also\u00a0featured\u00a0every\u00a0edition<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The<\/span>\u00a0vision of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>NAIG<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>to improve quality of life\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>Indigenous peoples through self-determined sport and cultural activities that celebrate Indigenous diversity while promoting equ<\/span>al\u00a0<\/span>participation in the social, cultural, and spiritual\u00a0<\/span>fabric\u00a0<\/span>of communities<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This event will be the largest multi-sport and cultural event ever to be held in Atlantic Canada. More than 5,000 athletes, coaches and team staff from 756 Indigenous nations will take part in cultural celebrations and compete in 15 sports across 21 venues, with the help of 3,000 volunteers, including more than fifty from team EDN.
