Proud of its new logo, Team Eastern Door and the North (EDN) is preparing for the next national Indigenous sports competitions, including the 2023 editions of the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) and the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).

The team is revamped and ready to defend its name, but above all, its culture.

Discover the history of Team EDN thanks to the evolution of its logo, which honours First Nations art!

New logo for the 2017 NAIG

In 2017, the FNQLHSSC was mandated by the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) to coordinate the participation of the Team EDN delegation (except for hockey, which would later be added to the FNQLHSSC’s responsibilities in 2019) at various events across Canada. The FNQLHSSC, already keen on its role, took up the torch and embarked on the creation of a new unifying logo.

The goal? To create an identity expressing First Nations and Inuit cultures and values and featuring specific elements, such as colours and symbols of nature representing the territory.

More than a logo, a work of art

In 2018, as part of an edition of the NAHC, a competition was launched to design the logo for the men’s and women’s teams of Team EDN. The proud winner was Frank Polson with his unique and colourful concept integrating in an original fashion the sports, culture and identity of Quebec First Nations and Inuit.

Since the new logo was greeted with enthusiasm, the FNQLHSSC, in collaboration with Frank Polson, reached out to the communities to find out whether they would be interested in using this same logo and adapting it for the NAIG. The response was unequivocal! Athletes, coaches and community members alike expressed their strong appreciation for the logo and gave it their approval.

About Frank Polson

Frank Polson, a member of the Algonquin community of Winneway (Long Point) in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, is one of the most representative contemporary First Nations artists. Some of his works have even been immortalized as part of a special collection of the Royal Canadian Mint. His art evokes determination, energy and courage, qualities that reflect our athletes. We are very honoured that Frank Polson’s work is now an important part of Team EDN!
